CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Golden Eagle women's tennis team rallied from two courts down to earn a 5-4 victory over visiting West Liberty on Friday afternoon at the Charleston Tennis Club to secure a second place regular season finish in the Mountain East Conference.
Â
UC found themselves trailing 2-1 at the conclusion of three doubles matches, only picking up a win at no. 2 doubles by
Jackie Bakos and
Taylor Todd. Number one player
Toni Katipa quickly evened the match score at 2-2 winning easily 6-0, 6-1 over West Liberty's Cabero. The Hilltoppers reclaimed the lead and looked to have control of the match after winning at no. 5 and no. 6 singles to put Charleston behind 4-2.
Â
The Golden Eagles fought back to even the match by
Ana Maria Pena and
Elise Edwards grinding out straight set wins at no. 2 and no. 3 singles, leaving only Jackie Bakos on the court as the deciding match. Bakos didn't disappoint the Charleston fans, cruising to a 6-4, 6-3 win, giving Charleston the conference runner-up finish.
Â
UC returns to the court Sunday morning in a tough non-conference match against Southern Indiana before starting the MEC Tournament Championship next week.
