ERIE, Pa. - The University of Charleston women's soccer team arrived on the campus of Gannon University today in preparation for Friday's NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament First Round. UC, the no. 5 seed, will square off with Edinboro University, the no. 4 seed, of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Charleston is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The Golden Eagles defeated Notre Dame(OH), 1-0, in the Mountain East Conference semifinals, before suffering a 1-0 loss in overtime to West Virginia Wesleyan in the championship game.

The Fighting Scots advanced to the Atlantic Subregional after reaching the PSAC Championship Game for the first time. Edinboro, the fourth seed, won a 1-0 decision over fifth-seed Kutztown in the opening round, then upset top-seeded and fifth-ranked Gannon, 3-1, in the semifinals. East Stroudsburg would win its second straight PSAC title with a 2-1 win in overtime. The Warriors came in as the seventh seed.

Halle Hammer -
Hammer is one of two Edinboro freshmen to earn All-PSAC honors, selected to the First Team. The midfielder is tied for second on the team in scoring with 17 points on 8 goals and an assist.
Jansen Hartmann - The senior midfielder/forward leads the Fighting Scots with 11 goals and 6 assists for 28 points earning her All-PSA First Team honors. She ranks fourth in the PSAC in points, fifth in goals, and seventh in assists. In addition, she has climbed to eighth all-time at Edinboro in career points (70), eighth in career goals (25), and third in career assists (20).

Playing at Sox Harrison Stadium, the Fighting Scots broke a scoreless tie at the half with three second-half goals. Samantha Kaiser and Karisa Fernandez each tallied a goal and an assist, while Becca Costello also scored. Costello put Edinboro on the board when she scored off an assist from Steph Tighe at the 52:34 mark. Then in the 66th minute, Fernandez scored off an assist from Kaiser. Less than four minutes later, the pair reversed roles as Kaiser scored off a pass from Fernandez. Goalkeeper Kate Stukbauer tallied two saves as the Fighting Scots outshot Charleston (WV), 19-7.

Edinboro and Charleston(WV) have played two common opponents -- Notre Dame(OH) and Kutztown. Edinboro defeated Notre Dame, 3-1, and has a pair of wins over Kutztown by scores of 4-1 and 1-0. Charleston(WV) played Notre Dame three times, going 2-1. They won by scores of 1-0 twice, and lost, 3-0. The Golden Eagles played Kutztown to a 1-1 tie.

MEC Semifinals - UC 1, Notre Dame (OH) 0

An Isabella Jaffin goal in the 53rd minute of the Mountain East women's soccer semifinal was enough to get Charleston into its first MEC final since joining the conference two seasons ago.Outshot 16-4, UC's Zoe Zyta came through with nine saves for her ninth shutout of the 2015 season in preserving the 1-0 semifinal win over Notre Dame. Charleston and theFalcons had split the season series but Notre Dame had the higher seed in today's match which allowed them to host the Golden Eagles. Hannah Myers beat the Falcon defender on the left sideline and placed a perfectly weighted pass through the Notre Dame defense that found Jaffin in stride who neatly took a touch and buried a shot inside the right post that gave Charleston the 1-0 victory.

MEC Finals - UC 0, WV Wesleyan 1 (2OT)
Charleston women's soccer fought hard for over 100 minutes with the #11 ranked West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats but came up short in the MEC Women's Soccer finals, dropping a 1-0 decision.West Virginia Wesleyan's Kelsey Sitka scored in the second overtime session to give the Bobcats the 1-0 victory over the University of Charleston and the 2015 MEC Women's Soccer Tournament title. Sitka's score in front of the net was set up by passes from Jane Schleicher and Kelsie Hibbs. Marlee Coleman was UC's top offensive threat with three shots on the day. Zoe Zyta helped keep the Bobcats off the board with 10 saves on the day.
