CHARLESTON, W.Va. –
Chyress Lockhart's buzzer beater as the horn sounded in overtime gave Charleston their second win of the season Tuesday evening, defeating Malone University 74-73 at the Charleston Civic Center.
Â
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 21 points in the second half but a fourth quarter rally by the visiting Pioneers forced an overtime period. Malone outscored UC by 23-5 in the fourth as the Charleston ladies were held without a field goal in the 10 minute quarter. It was a Rachel Goddard three-pointer that sent the game into an extra five minutes.
Â
Charleston held a 72-70 lead as the clock wound down in overtime until the Pioneers' Chrissie Vaughan hit a corner three with under seven seconds that put them in front 73-72. The Golden Eagles inbounded the ball to Chyress Lockhart who drove the length of the court to get up a contested lay-up that missed the mark, but followed her shot with a put back that found its way through the bottom of the net as the horn sounded with UC escaping with a 74-73 overtime win.
Â
Lockhart scored 20 points, her third time in as many games with scoring at least 20 points, to lead the Golden Eagles, adding four assists. Charleston also got double figure scoring nights from
Marissa Koob's career-high 12 points and
Tia Clement, who chipped in 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Â
UC rescheduled Saturday's game with UVa.-Wise to be played at Wise instead of Charleston due to conflicting schedules with UC hosting the NCAA Football and Men's Soccer Playoffs.
