CHARLESTON, W.Va. –
Patrick Guier's goal in the 80
th minute of Thursday's NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Super Region 1 Third Round proved to be all Charleston needed in a 1-0 win over Urbana University to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal match.
Urbana used a defensive formation to stall the Golden Eagle offensive attack and was successful at doing so for nearly 80 minutes before the Guier score. The Blue Knights looked to counter to produce their own chances, getting off eight shots with four on frame that Charleston keeper
Fabian Veit turned away. Although UC outshot Urbana by three, only three of their chances forced a save from the Blue Knight keeper Nathan Jones.
It also was a game of drama, with most of it coming just before the end of the first half when the center referee handed out straight red cards to UC's
Jake Young and Urbana's Michael McFarlane, forcing the teams to play 10 on 10 for the final 47 minutes. More reds followed as two members of the Blue Knight bench were shown the exit moments after Charleston scored the game winner.
The win sets up a rematch of last year's NCAA quarterfinal with LIU Post, who earlier in the day defeated Southern New Hampshire in PK's, 5-4, after going scoreless in regulation and two overtime periods. UC defeated Pioneers 1-0 in North Andover, Mass. last season on their way to the national championship game.
The NCAA Quarterfinal match between the Golden Eagles and Pioneers is set for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Schoenbaum Stadium in Coonskin Park.
