PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Charleston's men's soccer season came to close Thursday night at the Brosnaham Sports Complex in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Semifinals falling to Pfeiffer University 2-1 in double overtime.
UC finishes the season with a 20-3 record after making it to the final four for the second consecutive year. The Falcons advance to the national championship Saturday afternoon and await the winner from the second semifinal between Rockhurst and Cal Poly Pomona. Pfeiffer carries an unblemished 24-0 record into the finals.
Nathan Regis, the nation's leading scorer with 30 goals, added one to his season tally in the 31
st minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. That score stood for nearly 89 minutes until Will Roberts, the nation's second leading scorer, evened the match at 1-1 off a precision pass from Lewis Osborne. Roberts gathered the pass and placed a hard, low shot past the Pfeiffer keeper that found the left side netting forcing overtime.
Charleston carried the momentum into overtime and nearly won the match in the first 10 minute period but an Osborne shot missed by inches as it rolled past the left post and the score remained tied 1-1 heading to the second 10 minute overtime period. Four minutes into the second frame Jaime Siaj latched onto a Santi Moar pass that miraculously made its way through the Golden Eagle defense and a sliding shot found the back of Charleston's net.
Charleston outshot the Falcons and looked the more dangerous team throughout the match, forcing Pfeiffer keeper Tomas Correa to come up with nine saves on 10 on goal attempts.
