ATHENS, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles overcame a six-point halftime deficit Thursday evening to leave Concord University with a 71-68 win over the Mountain Lions.
Leading the way for UC's three-point win was senior guard,
Nichole Perry, who finished the contest with 20 points and five assists. Perry connected on four of her nine tries from beyond the arc. As a team Charleston shot 51% from the floor and made good on eight of their 20 three's for an even forty percent.Â
Ashley Milligan continues to be a spark off the bench, scoring 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting. It is the fourth time in six games Milligan has reached double figures in the scoring column.Â
Kiara Johnson nearly turned in a double-double for the Golden Eagles, chipping in nine rebounds to go with her 11 points.
Concord's Jacqueline Kestner had an impressive all-around game for the Mountain Lions in the loss. She came up just short of a triple-double finishing with 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.Â
Charleston trailed by as many as seven points late in the first half and still found themselves on the short end of a 34-28 game going into halftime. Turnovers plagued the Golden Eagles over the first 20 minutes as they gave the ball over 11 times to the Mountain Lions which resulted in nine Concord points.
Charleston head coach Adam Collins must have had some inspiring words for Charleston during the break because UC scored the first 11 points of the second half and quickly turned the halftime deficit into a five point lead, 39-34, just four minutes in. The Golden Eagles built their biggest lead of the game at 62-55 and seemed to have game under control with just over six minutes to play.
The Mountain Lions had other ideas and responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take a late one-point lead, 63-62, with 4:28 to play. Serveral Golden Eagles came through in crunch time with Milligan and Perry combining to score eight of UC's next nine points and the Charleston defense limited Concord to two points over that four minute stretch to take a 71-65 lead. Concord hit a three with five seconds to play, but it was a little too late as Charleston picked the 71-68 road win over the Mountain Lions.
Charleston, 19-5 (14-4), returns to Eddie King Gym Saturday to host University of Virginia College at Wise with game time slated for 2:00 p.m. UC narrowly escaped the Cavaliers in a previous meeting using overtime to earn a 80-75 victory.
