CHARLETON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Women's Softball team opened its home schedule with a double-header sweep of Bluefield State University by the scores of 11-0 and 9-0.
On the day, UC tallied 26 hits, scored 20 runs and drove in 20. The Golden Eagles were led by junior third baseman
Kelly Browning who was 4-for-5 with a triple and two-run homerun.Â
Sophomore
Rachelle Toppings added five hits while scoring three runs. Junior
Cortney Norris and senior
Ayla Santos combined for seven hits, including a two-run blast from Norris in the bottom of the sixth to run rule the Lady Blues.Â
In the circle, UC pitchers struck out 16 batters in just 11 innings of work, led by seniors
Morgan Aguirre and
Courtney Fain striking out 13 of those batters. BSU only tallied three hits on the day. Freshman
Jessie Rowe and senior
Bethany Cera both worked scoreless innings in relief.
Charleston, which wins its fifth straight for the second time this season, moves to 13-2. UC will open Mountain East Conference play this Saturday as it travels to Glenville State University.Â
