Softball Defeats Concord 1-0 and 4-3, Winning Streak at 10 Games

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston women's softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games Thursday afternoon with a double-header sweep of Concord University at the UC Softball Complex.  Concord who entered today's match-up featured a 17-game winning streak and a perfect 10-0 Mountain East Conference record and saw both fall with 1-0 and 4-3 victories for the Golden Eagles.

Game one featured two of the top pitchers in the MEC as UC's Courtney Fain squared off with Concord's Lacey McDougall.  Combined the two pitchers featured 21 wins on the season and both with sub two and half earned run averages.  Fain threw a gem, pitching seven strong innings giving up just two hits and striking out seven in her third shutout of the season.  She moved to 12-3 on the season.  McDougall was just as sharp only surrendering five hits over six innings and the lone run in the game coming from an inside the park homerun from junior Allison Evans.  McDougall fell to 10-4 on the season.

Concord (22-10, 10-2 MEC) looked to jump out front in the first inning of game two, however, with bases loaded game two starter Jessie Rowe worked out of a jam with two ground ball outs to escape.  Rowe, now 6-1 on the season 4-0 in MEC play worked five and one third innings giving up three runs as she left in the top of the sixth.  Fain, once again proved to be a force, striking out two of the next three batters to preserve the 4-3 lead in the sixth.  In the seventh, senior Andrea Hayes's diving catch recorded the second out of the inning and threw to first completing the line-drive double-play to end the game.  Fain picked up the save with one and two thirds innings adding three strike outs to her league leading total of 126 in just 87 and two thirds innings pitched.  At the plate Kelly Browning and Cortney Norris lead the way each finishing 2-for-3 in the game with Norris driving in two of the four runs scored.  Jenna Evans and A. Evans each scored a run in 1-for-3 and 1-for-2 games respectively.

UC is now 25-4 on the season, 10-2 in MEC play and is back in action Saturday April 4th as they host UVA-Wise in a double-header with first pitch slated for 2pm.
