SALEM, Va. –
Courtney Fain's one-hitter silenced the Falcons of Fairmont State University as the University of Charleston women's softball team defeated FSU, 5-0 in the opening round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
Fain, who struck out 12 batters in her complete game shut-out, got help in the first inning from the Charleston offense when
Rachelle Toppings drew a lead-off walk and
Cortney Norris belted a pitch over the right-center field fence as UC took an early 2-0 lead.
Bethany Williams singled two pitches later and scored on a fielder's choice by
Andrea Hayes.
The Golden Eagles added insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth when
Alayna Carlson walked and later scored on a wild pitch. Toppings then doubled to left-center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Norris and UC didn't look back, winning by the score of 5-0.
UC moves to 36-10 on the season and will take on Concord University at noon in Salem, Va. in the second round. Charleston and Concord split a double-header just a week ago.
