CALIFORNIA, Pa. –
Alayna Carlson's sixth inning pinch-hit three-run homerun propelled the University of Charleston to a 5-2 win over California University of Pennsylvania at Lilley Field Saturday morning to advance the Golden Eagles to Sunday's NCAA Regional finals.
Courtney Fain worked all seven innings for her 20
th win of the 2015 season, surrendering just two runs on three Vulcan hits while striking out nine and walking seven.
Charleston was able to produce five runs on eight hits, with four of those runs coming on two swings, a solo HR by
Bethany Williams and Carlson's game winner three-run bomb in the sixth.Â
The Vulcans struck first in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over Charleston on a solo blast by Lindsay Reicoff to start the scoring. It remained a 1-0 game until the fourth inning when the Golden Eagles evened the score a 1-1 after Williams belted her ninth homerun of the season over the left centerfield fence.
UC added a run in the fifth on a
Jenna Evans laser shot that hit the top of the left centerfield fence to score
Andrea Hayes and give Charleston a 2-1 lead. The Vulcans answered back with a run of their own in the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk by Shelby Heyd to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the bottom half of six.
With two outs in the sixth the Golden Eagles began their rally led by an
Ayla Santos infield single then a
Katelyn Hamilton single to center to put runners on first and second. Coach Loeser went to Carlson to pinch hit and she responded with the three-run blast to right center that gave Charleston a commanding 5-2 lead heading into the final frame.
California got two runners on and brought the tying run to the plate but Fain had enough gas left in the tank to get Natalya Smarra to pop out to Evans at second and give Charleston a spot in the regional finals tomorrow.
Charleston faces the winner of California Univ. of Pennsylvania and Gannon tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Lilley Field. The winner of the regional advances to the Super Regional with date, location and opponent to be determined.
