Golden Eagles Win Thriller Over Glenville

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - University of Charleston came out on top against Glenville State College on Saturday afternoon, squeaking out a 31-30 win over the Pioneers in a game that came down to the final play.

Holding the one point lead over the Pioneers, Glenville State took possession at their own 22-yard line with 2:30 remaining in the contest.  They quickly moved the ball into Golden Eagle territory and had first and 10 at the UC 34-yard line with around one minute to play.  On first down Charleston forced Pioneer running back Rahman Lee out of bounds for a one yard loss, but more importantly kept the clock moving.  Pioneer quarterback Sean Steele, who passed for 313 yards and three TD's, threw the next pass into UC linebacker's Rhakeem Stallings path who knocked it down at the line of scrimmage to force a third and 11.  UC defensive back Jonte Pooler, who had been thrust into the starting rotation because of injuries, came up with his two best plays of his young career on third and fourth down, breaking up consecutive passes and sealing the Golden Eagle victory.

Charleston quarterback Jeremy Johnson put the team in victory formation, took a knee and walked off the UC Stadium turf with a one-point win and a 2-1 record.

Glenville State had a very impressive day on the offensive side of ball, totaling over 500 yards of offense.  Steele had three TD's on over 300 yards passing and the running back duo of Lee and Tevin Drake went for 197 yards on 34 attempts but didn't account for a rushing TD.  Glenville also didn't capitalize on two Golden Eagle fumbles, unable to turn those turnovers into points.

Jeremy Johnson led the high powered Charleston offense with his arm and his legs, passing for 214 yards and running for 88 yards.  UC's own duo of running backs were the difference in today's win as Tevion Cappe rushed for 125 yards and a TD, and Marvin Elam scored three touchdowns on his 92 yard performance on 18 rushes.

Charleston's defense stood tall when it needed to as well.  Stallings anchored the Golden Eagles from his linebacker position, totaling 12 tackles, a sack and a pass break-up.  UC had seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage today and got their first sacks of the season, coming from Stallings and John Cominsky.

UC makes the short trip to Institute next Saturday for their Kanawha Valley rivalry game against an improved West Virginia State University team.  Kickoff is set for 1pm on the Yellow Jacket campus.
