Golden Eagles Blank Gannon in 4-0 Victory

Erie, Pa. – The Golden Knights of Gannon were no match for the Golden Eagles, as UC progressed to 2-0-0 early in the 2015 season.

The starting line up was largely unchanged from Mercyhurst, with Conor Branson back in after a hamstring strain, Patrick Guier handed his first start and Lewis Osborne getting the nod over Felipe Rafael Antonio.

UC started the game on the front foot and scored inside 5 minutes, when Guier looked to receive a ball on the top of the area, but dummied the ball to Augusto Maciel, who laid the ball neatly back into the path of the German.  Guier skillfully finished the chance he created rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home.

The Golden Eagles continued to create chances and it was the combination play down UC's left with Osborne weighting the ball nicely into the path of Bruno Oliveira whose cross picked out Maciel in the box.  The Brazilian center forward made no mistake from 6 yards out, confidently converting the chance.

Just one minute later, midfield engine Michael Hagarty was rewarded for his tireless work, when he pressed the Gannon midfielder whose weak back pass wasn't strong enough to reach his own goalkeeper.  Hagarty accepted the gift and calmly slotted the ball home, 3-0 UC, 19 minutes played.

The hungry Golden Eagles smelt the blood of the wounded Golden Knights, and seven minutes later struck again. It was again Oliveira providing the assist from the left hand side, whipping the ball into area perfectly for Antonio to rise highest and powerfully head the ball past the Gannon goalkeeper Jorge Hernandez.

After going in at halftime leading 4-0, UC may feel a little disappointed not to score more in the second half.  Assistant coach Dan Stratford added, "Tempo did drop a little in the second half, but we were always in complete control".  Charleston restricted their opponents to only one shot at Veit's goal, conjuring a massive 19 shots themselves.

#2 ranked Golden Eagles head to Urbana on Tuesday for their MEC Conference opener. They leave Erie with two wins, seven goals scored and zero conceded, a good start.
