CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Chyress Lockhart poured in 29 points as the Golden Eagles ended their five-game losing streak Monday evening at the Charleston Civic, defeating Wheeling Jesuit University 68-58 in their first game of 2016.
The Golden Eagles clung to two-point lead, 53-51, after 37 minutes of closely played MEC women's basketball action before Charleston's Mya Walker connected on two corner three-pointers in a 30-second span that gave UC eight-point advantage with two minutes to play. Charleston extended their lead to 13 points before cruising to the 10-point win as they improve to 2-3 in Mountain East Conference play.
Lockhart led all scorers in her season-high 29 points but other Golden Eagles were instrumental in the win over the 8-2 Cardinals. Marissa Koob stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals in 35 minutes of play. Walker came off of the UC bench to score 14 with 11 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. Kiara Johnson was a spark for Charleston's interior pulling down 11 rebounds and adding eight points in just 17 minutes.
The Golden Eagles return to the court Wednesday evening to host top-20 ranked West Liberty University at the Charleston Civic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
