UC Men's Soccer Back in National Semifinals

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – It took 110 minutes and penalty kicks to crown Charleston the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Super Region 1 champion Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Soccer Park, defeating Adelphi University 5-3 in PK's.

Will Roberts beat Panther keeper Spenser Powell for the game-winner, sending the Golden Eagles to their third consecutive NCAA DII Men's Soccer National Semifinal.  The DII Championship will be held at Swope Park in Kansas City, Mo. starting on December 1st with the National Semifinal followed by the National Championship on December 3rd.

Unlike the Atlantic Region final played on Thursday, Charleston struck first in Saturday's match on Jermaine Windster's right-footed blast from 20 yards out that found the top right corner of the goal, giving UC a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.  The Golden Eagles seemed to take full control of the game just 10 minutes later when Felipe Antonio collected a Windster pass inside the 18, turned his defender and fired a shot into the lower right corner of the net.  It was 2-0 with Charleston leading in the 32nd minute.

Adelphi began to find their footing late in the first half, forcing a Paulo Pita as time expired on the first half clock but would carry the momentum into the second 45 minutes.  Despite trailing 2-0, the Panthers would have the better run of play for much of the second half and finally broke through the Charleston defense in the 81st minute.  Federico De Oliveira took advantage of a Charleston defensive mistake on a long ball by Powell leading to a one-on-one chance with Pita, tucking it in the lower right corner to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Less than three minutes later Adelphi found the equalizer, converting a PK after Charleston was whistled for a foul in the box.  The Panthers' Alejandro Penzini calmly stuck the ball pass Pita who had guessed the wrong way, tying the game at 2-2 in the 83rd minute.  The final seven minutes ticked without a score, forcing overtime between the shocked Golden Eagles and Adelphi.

The Panthers looked to score the match-winner on two separate occasions in the first OT period, hitting the crossbar twice early in the extra frame only to see it bounce away.  Charleston would survive and settle in, creating chances of their own but couldn't sneak one past the Panther keeper setting up the PK shootout.

Paulo Pita came up with eight saves on the afternoon but not one was as big as he made on Adelphi's first PK attempt, diving to his left to deny the Panthers to start the shootout.  All five Charleston shooters were successful, capped off by Roberts' match-winner that sent UC's bench and coaches into hysteria as they rushed the field.
