CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston women's basketball team fell 58-52 to No. 6 ranked Virginia Union in a non-conference matchup on Friday evening at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex.

The Golden Eagles played a close game with the Panthers the entire game after jumping out to a 12-7 lead early in the game. Virginia Union held a 29-26 lead at halftime and remained in the lead for the rest of the contest. UC pulled to within two points with 9:24 remaining in the game but the Panthers never surrendered the lead.

Abby Watson led the way for Charleston, finishing the night with 21 points (8-9 FT) and five rebounds. Jordyn Peck recorded nine points while Darian Apperson tallied six points. Monet Saunders led the Golden Eagles in rebounds after grabbing 10 boards while Anna Hayton collected nine rebounds.

The UC defense prevented the Panthers from making any three-pointers (0-11) and forced them to shoot 33.8 percent from the floor. The Golden Eagles shot 26.8 percent from the field while going 6-31 from beyond the arc.

Charleston will return to action on the road against Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday, January 3. The next home game for the Golden Eagles will be on Saturday, January 14 which will be the Grand Opening of the H. Bernard Wehrle Athletic Arena.
