CLERMONT, Florida – The University of Charleston softball team defeated No. 21 West Chester University, 6-5, and Cedarville University, 4-1, Wednesday morning to run its winning streak to nine games. With the victories UC is 10-2 on the season.
In the opening game,
Jessie Rowe limited Cedarville to just one hit, a solo home-run in the fifth inning. She shut down the rest of the Yellow Jackets offensively, striking out six and walking none in her complete game, her fourth win of the season.
Bethany Williams provided the offense as she went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored, and three runs batted in.
Laura Ashlock was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Allison Evans extended her hitting streak to seven games with a single in the fifth inning.
In the second game, Charleston took on 21
st-ranked West Chester, which entered undefeated on a 17-game winning streak. UC struck first, scoring four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. However, WCU wasn't going anywhere and put together a rally, scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Rowe relieved starter
Alli Burdette with two outs in the sixth inning to pick up her fourth save of the season. Burdette, who picked up her sixth win on the season, pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run, striking out six, and only allowing one walk.
Offensively for UC,
Katelyn Hamilton, Ashlock,
Kelly Browning, and Evans all had two hits apiece and together scored all six runs and accounted for four runs batted in. Evans extended her hitting streak to eight games.
UC will take a day off on Thursday and is back in action in Clermont on Friday against Ohio Dominican at 1 p.m. and Ashland University at 3 p.m.
