UC Wins 16th Straight With Sweep of No. 16 WV Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston extended its record-setting winning streak to 16 games Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of No. 16 West Virginia Wesleyan by scores of 4-0 and 3-1.

With the wins, UC moves to 36-7 (23-3) and now holds sole possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference South Division with just six games remaining.

In game one, Alayna Carlson led the charge, going 3-for-3, including two home runs and three runs batted in -- a solo blast to get UC on the board in the second, and a two-run shot in the fourth that scored Bethany Williams, who had doubled the at-bat prior. Charleston added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Rachelle Toppings that scored Jenna Evans. Toppings had two hits in the game while Alyssa Stanley added the seventh hit for UC. Alli Burdette pitched a complete game shutout, surrendering only one hit and striking out five, stretching her league high in strikeouts on the season to 145. The win gave Burdette her 20th on the season, which also leads the MEC.

In game two, Charleston struck first with a solo home run by Williams in the second inning. Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of third, but Charleston answered in the fourth, taking advantage of two Wesleyan errors. Laura Ashlock ripped an RBI-single down the right field line that scored Katelyn Hamilton from second, and Ansley Warner, who was pinch running for Ashlock, scored from second after a throwing error. Williams was 3-for-3 in the game. Jessie Rowe picked up her 16th win in the complete game effort, lowering her team-best ERA to 1.30.

Charleston finishes the regular season with a six-game home stand, starting with a doubleheader against West Virginia State on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
