CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The No. 24 University of Charleston finished the regular season on a 22-game winning streak after a 2-0 and 6-1 sweep of Shepherd University on Sunday afternoon.
At 42-7, UC set the school's single-season win record, breaking the previous mark of 40. Charleston clinched the MEC South Division championship, and finished with the best record in the Mountain East Conference at 29-3.
Game one was a pitchers' duel until the fifth inning, when
Jenna Evans singled, and then scored on an
Allison Evans triple.
Rachelle Toppings followed that up with a single to give UC a 2-0 lead that would hold.
Alli Burdette pitched the complete game shutout, picking up her 25th win while striking out six and only surrendering three hits.
In game two, UC struck in the first on a three-run home run by
Kelly Browning. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Allison Evans singled up the middle to drive in another run, giving UC a 4-0 lead.
Bethany Williams added an RBI in the second, and
Alyssa Stanley tripled in the fourth to give UC a 6-0 lead. Shepherd managed a lone run in the top of the sixth to make it 6-1.
Jessie Rowe pitched the complete game, picking up her 17th win and only surrendering two hits.
The Golden Eagles next travel to the MEC tournament, and will play against Notre Dame College at noon Friday in Troutville, Va. For more tournament information, visit
