TROUTVILLE, Va. – Golden Eagle pitcher Alli Burdette threw a one-hit shutout of West Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon at the Botetourt Softball Complex to advance to tomorrow's Mountain East Conference championship game. The 1-0 win over the Bobcats was UC's 25
th straight victory, and Burdette's 27
th on the season.
Â
Charleston and the Bobcats totaled only five hits on the afternoon, as Wesleyan's Alyssa Shawgo kept the Golden Eagle offense off-balance for much of the afternoon. UC, however, scored the game's only run in the 6
th after five shutout innings. Rachelle Toppings reached base on an error and moved to second on Katelyn Hamilton's sacrifice bunt. Laura Ashlock followed with a single to right center that put Toppings at third with one out and Kelly Browning at the plate.
Â
Browning came through with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home the speedy Toppings from third to break the 0-0 deadlock. Wesleyan would threaten in the final frame, putting two Bobcats on with two outs but Burdette would get Olivia Gore to fly out to Alyssa Stanley in left field to end the game.Â
Â
Charleston now awaits the winner of West Virginia Wesleyan and UVa.-Wise to play in tomorrow's title game. First pitch of the MEC championship is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Botetourt Complex in Troutville, Va.
