CHARLESTON, W.Va. – University of Charleston fared much better than last season in the their first of two matchups with Wheeling Jesuit University, defeating the visiting Cardinals 5-1 at Schoenbaum Stadium. The Cardinals had swept the regular season matches last season with UC before the Golden Eagles got the best of them in the MEC Tournament, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Â
UC opened the scoring on one of two
Bruno Oliveira's free kick goals only to Wheeling tie the match up five minutes later at the 33:38 mark in the first half. A perfectly guided
Patrick Guier header on a beautiful cross by
Danilo Dias just before the half gave Charleston a 2-1 lead that would build on in the second half.
Â
Oliviera scored his second on a 25-yard strike that beat the Cardinal keeper, hit the post then rebounded off the back of the diving keeper to find the back of the net.Â
Rafael Simoes didn't waste any time to get in on the scoring after being inserted just before a
Will Roberts corner where Roberts hit Simoes on the back post that he cleaned up with a goal-scoring header.Â
Jermaine Windster provided the final tally on a nice feed from Simoes through the Cardinal defense that Windster easily finished going one-on-one with the keeper.
Â
UC returns to action Saturday afternoon on the road at Shepherd.
