CHARLESTON, W.Va. – University of Charleston took the first installment of season against their Kanawha Valley rival, West Virginia State University, Thursday evening at the H. Bernard Wehrle Sr. Athletic Arena by knocking off the Yellow Jackets 79-65.

The Golden Eagles used a 29-point second quarter where they outscored the Jackets by 15, giving UC a 49-30 advantage heading into the halftime break. Leading by just four entering the second quarter, UC opened the 10-minute period by scoring the first 10 points to increase their lead to 14, 30-16.

 It was smooth sailing for the Golden Eagles in the second half, building their biggest of 22 points late in the third quarter before cruising to the 16-point victory. It's the seventh straight win for coach Adam Collins against West Virginia State University.

Charleston was led Jordyn Peck's 27 points as she continues her strong play over the last three games, averaging over 28 points per game for the Golden Eagles. Abby Watson chipped in 14 points while both Anna Hayton and Darian Apperson each posted a double-double in points and rebounds. As a team Charleston shot over 50% while holding the Yellow Jackets to just 35% shooting from the floor.

UC (6-11, 5-6 MEC) hits the road on Saturday to take on UVa.-Wise. Tip is schedule for 2:00 p.m.
