No. 25 Cardinals Too Much for Golden Eagles

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – University of Charleston couldn't captitalize on a strong start Saturday afternoon at the H. Bernard Wehrle Sr. Athletic Arena, falling to the No. 25 ranked Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals, 74-48.
 
Charleston, now 7-13 overall and 6-8 in MEC play, jumped out to a 11-2 run in the early minutes of the first quarter but Jesuit scored the next 13 points to claim a 15-11 lead after 10 minutes of action. The Cardinals continued to pour it on UC in the second quarter, outscoring the Golden Eagles 21-7 in the quarter to hold a 36-18 lead going to the break.  Jesuit was paced by strong guard play from Mariah Callen and Monica Burns, who turned in 23 first half points for the Cardinals. 
 
The Golden Eagles made a dent into Jesuit's lead, cutting it down to 12, 47-35, late in the third quarter after a pair of Watson free throws but a Burns three-pointer with :07 left in the quarter extended the lead to 15.  UC couldn't keep the momentum going into the fourth quarter falling behind by as many as 33 during the final 10 minutes as Wheeling cruised to a 74-48 victory.
 
Charleston got double-figure scoring from Abby Watson and Mya Walker scoring 12 and 10 respectively for the Golden Eagles.  Burns from Jesuit led all scorers with 24 points while knocking down five shots from behind the arc.
 
UC returns to the court Wednesday evening to host Urbana University.  Tip-off with the Blue Knights is at 5:30 p.m.
