Charleston to Face Lynn in National Title Game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of Charleston will square off with Lynn University in Saturday's final.  The Fighting Knights advanced to the title game following a 3-0 PK win over Rockhurst University after a scoreless 110 minutes.  UC and Lynn are no strangers as the two squared off in the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship in Louisville, Kentucky with the Fighting Knights defeating Charleston, 3-2, to claim their third NCAA DII Men's Soccer title.  The Golden Eagles are 0-3 all-time in head-to-head matches with Lynn.

Tournament Recap: After falling in the Mountain East Conference Final 2-1 in overtime to West Virginia Wesleyan College the Golden Eagles looked ahead as they were matched with the Bobcats once again the the second round of the NCAA tournament. 

Charleston made it through the second round with a header in the 36th minute by Robin Lapert to give UC the 1-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles held on to take the victory and move to the third round of the tournament. 

The Golden Eagles made quick work of the West Chester Golden Rams with a 3-0 victory to head into the fourth round of the tournament. 

With only 8 teams remaining Charleston was to face the LIU Post pioneers who had just knocked off Adelphi in round three. The score stayed tied 0-0 until Gabriel Cabral sent the ball past the keeper on a free kick with just 30 seconds to go in the first half. Robin Lapert sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles with a header off a corner kick from Cabral. 

The Golden Eagles battled through a scoreless match against the Cal Poly Pamona Broncos in the NCAA Semifinal. With just two minutes to play in regulation Patrick Guier fired a shot at the Bronco's keeper who knocked the ball into the goal during his attempt to save it. Charleston advanced to the NCAA Title game with the 1-0 victory. 

By the Numbers: Atlantic region Player of the Year, Will Roberts leads the Golden Eagles with 11 goals on the season. The Senior forward is seeing his fourth straight final four. Roberts currently leads Division 2 in career points, goals, and is third in career goals per game. 

Patrick Guier tallied 7 goals on the season. While goalkeeper, Paulo Pita is second in the nation in clean sheets for the year.
 
The Golden Eagles have notched 62  goals on the season, only giving up 8. 
  
Tournament History: The Golden Eagles are heading to their fourth semifinal in four years (fifth in six), and have been the National runner-up twice. This will be the seventh in program history. 
 
In 2016 the Golden Eagles went to the title game, but fell to Wingate University 2-0. 
  
During the 2015 season, UC fell to Pfeiffer University in the final four who went on to win the National Title after defeating Cal Poly Pamona. 

Knights Stat Check: 
-Lynn's strength lies in its defense, which is allowing only 0.51 goals per game on 2.8 shots on frame with 13 clean sheets. 
-Blue and White are on a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) with four shutouts. 

Golden Eagle Stat Check: 
- UC ranks third in the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
- The Golden Eagles hold the fourth highest scoring offense in Division II with 2.89 goals per game.
- Defensively, Charleston ranks second in the nation in goals allowed at .41 per game.
- UC has tallied 17 shutouts this season.
- The Golden Eagles have not given up a goal during the tournament, recording three straight shutouts.
- Rank in Division II's top 10 in points per game (7th), total points (5th), win-loss-tied percentage (4th) and shutout percentage (2nd).
