How It Happened
The Golden Eagles began the night strong by dominating the falcons and winning the set 25-13. Carly Granger had 4 kills in the game and Chloe Massaro had 9 assists. The Golden Eagles started the set in an early battle that quickly turned in the Golden Eagles' favor. Of the last 13 points in the set, Charleston won 10 and lost 3. The final point of the set was provided via Rachel Phalen kill with the assist coming from Kelsey Matusic
With a one to none lead going into the second set, Charleston looked unprepared for a strong offensive showing by the Falcons. They lost the first 3 points but battled back to tie the set at 10 apiece. However, the strong offense and some unfortunate misplays by the Golden Eagles allowed for a set win by the Falcons. In the set Falcons' player Mary-Kate McHugh had 6 kills. UC's Jour'Ney Powell and Tori Clark had 3 kills apiece. UC lost the set by a score of 25-14.
The fourth set was another shot for shot battle that was eventually won by the Golden Eagles. Carly Granger led both teams with 8 kills and 11 digs while Janeese Vervelde contributed 6. The set went down to the wire with Charleston edging out a victory by a score of 25-21. The turning point of the set occurred when the Falcons were up 7-6 when UC went on a 5-point streak. These points ended up being the deciding factor in the set. Jour'Ney Powell had the final kill with the assist coming from Chloe Massaro.
The final set was again a tough battle for both teams. The Golden Eagles began the set winning 4 of the first 5 points, which would prove to be enough to edge out another victory. The Golden Eagle defense proved to be too much for the Falcons as they edged. Kelsey Matusic had 7 digs in the set and ended the night with a total of 17. The final point was provided via a Mary Kate McHugh attack error. UC won the set by a score of 25-18 and bounced back from their previous loss to Wheeling Jesuit.
