Golden Eagles Can't Hold Off Bobcats, Fall 27-26

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles (4-2, 4-2 MEC) with a 20-14 loss to the couldn't hold off the 0-5 West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats (1-5, 1-4 MEC). The game came down to a last-minute field goal for the Golden Eagles. Unable to convert, Charleston fell 27-26.

How it Happened
West Virginia Wesleyan returned the opening kickoff for 90 yards to put them in scoring position early. Less than two minutes in to the start of the game, Luke Casey hit his receiver for a 14-yard pass to put Wesleyan on the board first. The Bobcats could not convert the PAT, taking the 6-0 lead over Charleston.
 
Senior linebacker CJ Bagwell picked of Casey's pass for a pick-6 less than two minutes into the second quarter, but UC was also unable to convert the point-after. With the score tied and the momentum on the side of the Golden Eagles, Brant Grisel hit Mike Strachan for 36 yards, for the Golden Eagles second touchdown, once again unable to snag the PAT, the Golden Eagles held a six-point lead going into the break.
 
With seven minutes to play in the third quarter, Casey kept the ball for 17 yards to give the Bobcats the 13-12 lead over Charleston, the Bobcats kept coming as they increased their lead to 20-12 with 36 second to play in the third, after Luke Casey hit Derek Drapen for 16 yards.
 
The Golden Eagles struck early in the fourth quarter when Grisel connected with DeAndre Brooks to bring the score to 20-18, the Golden Eagles failed on the two-point conversion, leaving the Bobcats with the two-point advantage.
 
The Golden Eagles remained on the hunt in the waning minutes of regulation. With 5:12 to play, Jimmy Wheeler took the ball 22 yards for the score, the Golden Eagles snagged an extra two points to give them the 26-20 lead.
 
In the final minute of regulation, Jujuan Linzy caught a 10-yard pass from Luke Casey to go up 27-26 UC.

Charleston Leaders
Senior defensive tackle, John Cominsky led the Golden Eagles with 7 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, while senior linebacker CJ Bagwell snagged his first pick-6 of the season.
 
Wesleyan Leaders
Malcolm Cutner led with 10 tackles for the Bobcats. Quarterback Luke Casey went 11-for-18 for 160 yards in the win.
