Golden Eagles Swept in MEC Opener

CHARLESTON, WV – Charleston Softball fell in it's MEC opener on Sunday afternoon. The UVA-Wise Cavaliers swept the Golden Eagles taking game one 4-2 and following with a 3-0 shutout.

How it Happened 
GAME 1: 
Bridget Henzel got the ball rolling for the Cavaliers in the top of the first with a triple to right field sending Samantha Ely home. During the next at bat Taylor Creasy reached on an error allowing Henzel to score giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead over the Golden Eagles. In the bottom of the first Shelby Ume singled to left field, giving A.J. Martin enough time to advance from second and score to cut the UVA-Wise lead to just one run. 

In the bottom of the third, Emily Dutton singled to center field, sending Shelby Ume home to tie that game up 2-2. During the top of the fourth inning Monica Brandts doubled to center field sending two runs home and giving Wise the two-run advantage over the Golden Eagles. 

Charleston fell 4-2 in game one of the doubleheader. 

GAME 2: 
Neither team could get the bats going in the first four innings, but in the top of the fifth, Lucindy Lawson was able to advance to second on a error allowing Zoe Millard and Kelsy Padgett to score for Wise. 

In the top of the seventh Taylor Creasey singled to right field to bring Kaylee Jones home. UVA-Wise held on for the 3-0 victory and sweep of the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles will play host to the Concord Mountain Lions on Monday. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
