CHARLESTON, W.VA -- Head women's basketball coach, Becky Burke announced the hiring of Tobias Pinson as the Golden Eagles basketball assistant. Tobias Pinson joins the Golden Eagles staff after a season with Winthrop University.
Prior to joining the Winthrop staff Pinson served as an assistant coach of the women's basketball program at the University of South Carolina Upstate in 2016-17. His duties included day-to-day basketball operations, academic advisor liaison, recruiting on and off campus, video scouting of opponents and working with guards and post players. In 2016-17 the Spartans has an Atlantic Sun Second Team All-Conference selection in Raven Jefferson and a member of the Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen Team in Riley Popplewell. Pinson was a speaker for the Assistant Coaches Round Table at the 2017 WBCA Final Four National Convention.
Prior to his assistant job with the Spartans, Pinson was a graduate assistant for the women's basketball team at Walsh University (2015-2016) in North Canton, OH. He also served as head JV coach for the women's basketball team. He did recruiting, breakdown of film for scouting and helped with skill development of posts and guards. He coached two all-conference players in Kelsey Funderburgh (1
stTeam) and Brooklyn Wooten (2
nd Team) and an All-Defensive Team member in Jaylnn Graham.
He began his coaching career as a volunteer basketball assistant at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC while pursuing his undergraduate degree.
Pinson has ties to Winthrop as he began his collegiate career with the Eagles as a member of the men's basketball team in 2011-12 before transferring to Spartanburg Methodist, where he was a member of the men's basketball team. In 2012-13 the team finished 35-1 and advanced to the Final Four. He received his Bachelor's of Science in Business Economics and Finance from the University of South Carolina-Upstate. He's currently pursuing his Masters of Business Administration degree in Management.
