CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Golden Eagles Women's Basketball team ousted the Glenville State Pioneers 78-72 notching their first win against Kim Steven's squad since March of 2017 when the Golden Eagles knocked the ranked Pioneers out of the MEC Tournament. The Golden Eagles slowed down the Pioneers fast paced game play and held the visitors to their lowest score line of the season. Charleston was led by forwards, Anna Hayton and Erykah Russell who both pitched double-doubles in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was close from the jump as the Pioneers narrowly outscored the Golden Eagles 21-20 in the first quarter. Neither team led by more than three points, but the Golden Eagles capitalized on their chances offensively shooting 67 percent from the field to the Pioneers 43.
The Golden Eagles continued to outshoot their opponents after gaining the lead in the second quarter. Although the score remained tight Charleston went into the break with a two-point lead over their opponent.
After the intermission Charleston came out hot again out scoring their opponents 13-2 with just over three minutes to play in the period. After gaining a 14-point advantage the Pioneers brought the score within 10-points heading in to the fourth quarter trailing Charleston 52-62.
The fourth quarter was big for the Pioneers who clawed their way back into the game, narrowing the gap between them and the Golden Eagles, but Glenville could not break the six-point barrier. Glenville outscored the Golden Eagles 20-16 in the fourth, but it was not enough as Charleston shot no less than 50 percent on all fronts for the game and held steady with a balance attack as three Golden Eagles tallied double digit performances.
Charleston held on to down the Pioneers 78-72.
