ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Charleston women's tennis learned their opponent would be Barry University, the 2018 defending NCAA DII Champion, in the opening the round of the 2019 NCAA DII Women's Tennis Championship at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
The Golden Eagles will match up with Bucs on Wednesday, May 22nd at 8:00 a.m. Barry advanced out of the South Region after knocking off Saint Leo, 4-0. This will be the 23rd National Final appearance for the Buccaneers, including 9 of the last 11 seasons. Barry won the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, also with a win over Saint Leo, and carries an overall record of 22 wins and 2 losses into the matchup with the Golden Eagles. The Bucs have a long history of women's tennis success, capturing four national titles, including the last two. They won the 2018 national title in Surprise, Arizona with a 5-0 win over West Florida.
Charleston makes their first ever appearance in the National Championships, coming in as the No. 16 seed to take on the top-ranked Buccaneers. UC departs for the national tournament on Monday, May 20th for a banquet celebrating their selection to the NCAA Championships, followed by a practice on Tuesday morning before squaring off with the Bucs on Wednesday morning.
