CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia State won its fifth Mountain East Conference Tournament title by defeating Charleston, 4-1, on Friday.
The match started at 11 a.m. the Brian David Fox Tennis Center, and was slated to move indoors nearby to be completed. However, water on one of the indoor courts forced the match to be completed on Friday night at the Charleston YMCA.
Doubles finished outside with West Virginia State taking the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Laura Isbey helped double that lead for the Yellow Jackets with a quick, 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 2 singles. Nika Tadic won 6-0, 6-3, to go ahead 3-0 and put WVSU one point from winning the match. Charleston's Silvana Slusarciuc got the Golden Eagles on the board with a win at No. 4 singles.
The decisive match came at No. 1 singles where Kiersten Hensley took the first set 6-1 over Kristine Gegeshidze. Gegeshidze battled back in the second set, but Hensley managed to win 7-5 to take the set and match for WVSU.
