Late Goal Lifts Golden Eagles Over Hilltoppers

Charleston, W.Va- The Golden Eagle Women's soccer team pulled out a big win against West Liberty on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics
Location – Elliot Field- Welch Athletic Complex
Records – Charleston ( 6-4, 5-3 MEC) West Liberty ( 5-3-2, 5-2-2 MEC)
Score – 3 UC 2 WLU

How It Happened:

The Golden Eagles who are never shy taking shots and putting balls on net, kept that form in the first half on Sunday. UC would have an opportunity on a set piece that was designed to give Madison Hansen a shot on goal. Hansen would make an incredible effort but would be thwarted by a great save from the West Liberty goalkeeper. The second chance came when Kate Eddy found a hole inside the six-yard box and had a clear shot on goal. However, the West Liberty goalkeeper closed the distance on Eddy and prevented the goal.

The lone scoring in the first half came from a quick counterattack from Anne Williams who found Rileigh Gualtiere for the goal to make it 1-0 Hilltoppers.

The second half started with a flurry of offense by both sides. Laura Vierhout sent the ball a mile into the air in what seemed like an errant shot. Goalkeeper Olivia Montgomery lost the ball in the sun and was unable to corral the errant shot and conceded the first goal at the hands of the Golden Eagles, tying the score at one.

Shortly after Jori Alexander was able to find the top corner of the net from a corner by the Hilltoppers.

That would be the final scoring until Rachel Osbourne made a beautiful move to get past two defenders and bury one into the bottom right corner to take a 3-2 lead.

Up Next: UC will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday, October 13th against Wheeling.
