HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: The Pioneers took a short-lived lead in the top of the second, using a trio of singles to get on the board. The Golden Eagles wasted no time, plating the equalizer in the bottom of the frame after freshman Hannah Rose doubled in junior infielder Kendal Marshall.
Charleston added insurance the next inning, capitalizing on two Glenville errors to score three times and take a 4-1 lead. The Pioneers narrowed the lead, scoring two in the fourth on three singles and UC miscue.
Again, Charleston responded, plating five runs in the bottom of the frame to add cushion for the 9-4 victory. Redshirt freshman Kaylee Hotchkiss doubled and then scored, and senior Megan Eder drove in two on a double to center field. Redshirt freshman Allysa Lake also doubled in the inning to bring home rookie Alivia Conte, who was pinch running for Eder, and the final run of the day was brought in via a sacrifice fly from freshman Morgan Hoppe.
A solo shot for the Pioneers in the seventh cut the lead to 9-4, but the Golden Eagles escaped after back-to-back swinging strikeouts from reliever Alyssa Yungwirth secured the win. Yungwirth struck out four in two innings of work, while the win went to Danielle Bauer, who moves to 4-2 on the season.
Game Two: Glenville State attacked early in the nightcap, plating three runs in the opening frame off of a triple from shortstop Mackenzie Martinelli.
The Golden Eagles tied things in the third after a three-run blast from Gracie Donato, her first long ball of the season.
Rose continued to carry a hot bat into Game 2, singling home both Hoppe and Lake to put UC back on top at 5-3.
The final run of the afternoon came in the fifth inning when redshirt freshman Emma Groe delivered a pinch-hit single to center field, bringing Marshall across the plate to give Charleston the 6-3 decision. Hoppe got the victory, tossing all seven frames, striking out seven, and did not surrender a walk.
