Softball Splits Friday Series with West Virginia Wesleyan

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston softball team split their Friday evening series with the Bobcats from West Virginia Wesleyan at Culpepper Field. After coming out with a convincing win for the Golden Eagles in game one (17-6), the Bobcats used a three-run bottom of the sixth inning in game two to come away with a 5-2 win in game two.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Eagles took a commanding lead in the first inning, scoring six runs on six hits while sending eleven to the plate. Marshall singled to centerfield which brought home a pair of runs while four other Charleston players recorded RBIs in the inning.
  • Holding a 6-0 lead before even getting to the mound, Charleston starting pitcher Dani Bauer went to work, allowing just one run over the first three innings of the game before being tabbed for three more in the fourth inning after a defensive error on Charleston's side. Bauer finished the game logging 4.0 IP, allowing four runs, one earned while striking out two.
  • After Brionna Bowman plated a run in the third with a single and the Bobcats score three in the 4th, the Golden Eagles went to push across ten runs in the 5th inning on eight hits. Charleston batted around nearly twice in the inning, with the highlight of the inning being three home runs. Bowman notched a three-run home run to record her 6th RBI of the game while Megan Eder hit a two-run shot and Gracie Donato hit a solo.
  • The Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the 5th against Alyssa Yungwirth, who allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one and walking a batter. The game concluded after five innings of play.

How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first two innings, the Bobcats struck the board first in the bottom half of the third inning against Charleston starting pitcher Morgan Hoppe after Grace Hightower and Brooke Clark both notched solo home runs to put the Bobcats on top 2-0.
  • The Golden Eagles clawed their way back, putting up runs in the 5th and 6th innings to tie the game at 2-2. After Alyssa Lake homered in the 5th to bring the game within one, Hannah rose brought home Karlie Pinkerton on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
  • The Bobcats answered back in the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring three runs after Kiley Turner hit a solo shot and Clark singled home a pair.
  • Hoppe finished the game logging 5.2 IP, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out four. Dani Bauer came in and recorded the final out in the bottom half of the 6th inning while working around a hit and walk.
