CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The University of Charleston Women's tennis team defeated the Hilltoppers from West Liberty University on Tuesday afternoon in front of an energetic Schoenbaum Court crowd, winning the match 6-1. With the win, the Golden Eagles have now won their last nine matches and move to 4-0 in MEC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start in doubles, as all three pairing won their matches in swift time. The pairing of Prinkle Singh and Julia Lif defeated Cliffe and Agarwal 6-0 at first doubles, while Katie Swann and AlexiAnn Drouin defeated Agudelo and Pena 6-0 at the second doubles. The only pairing to drop a set was UC's third doubles, as Haarini Balakrishnan and Meggan William defeated Valencia and Olsen 6-1.
The Golden Eagles have now improved their doubles record to 31-1 on the season after the clean sweep today.
In singles, Singh defeated Cliffe 6-0, 6-2. The redshirt freshman from Chandigarh, India got off to a quick start in what would be a dominant first set. At the #3 singles, Drouin defeated Agarwal 6-1, 6-1 while Balakrishnan defeated Agudelo 6-2, 6-3.
Barbera Balancho played in at #5 singles, defeating Pena in convincing 6-2, 6-2 fashion. Julia Lif would be the player of the match, defeating Olsen 6-0, 6-0 at #6 singles, finishing the day 18-0 after a clean 6-0 sweep in singles.
In the closest match of the day, Katie Swann dropped her match to Valencia. After dropping the first set 4-6, Swann would storm back to win the second set 7-6 which forced a tiebreaker. In a first-to-ten scenario, Swann fell 8-10 as Valencia was able to bring home the only score of the day for the Hilltoppers.
