Athens, W. Va – The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team travelled to Concord University looking to take a game from the third place Mountain Lions. Additionally, Charleston was tasked with breaking the Mountain Lions' 24-game home win streak. Tianni Kelly's squad would look to change that on Wednesday night.
JUST THE BASICS
LOCATION: Carter Center – Athens, W.Va
SCORE: UC 81, CU 67
RECORDS: Golden Eagles (7-5, 5-3 MEC), Mountain Lions (12-5, 7-4 MEC)
How it Happened
Charleston began the game with seven unanswered points starting with a three made by CC Davis. The ladies then extended the lead to 10 after a three and a layup were made by Markyia McCormick. UC would hold a 10 point lead for most of the first quarter while racking up a 42% FG percentage throughout.
Concord would outscore Charleston in the next period racking up 21 points in the second quarter to UC's 18. The ladies would do an excellent job defending long range shots in the second quarter by holding the Mountain Lions to no threes and making two of their own. The Golden Eagles entered the locker room up by just four however as the Mountain Lions looked to come out with momentum after the strong first half finish.
Anastasiia Zakharova would start the scoring with a layup a minute and a half into the second half. Although the Mountain Lions looked to be gaining some momentum, Charleston would be having none of that on the night as they stretched their lead to eight with 5:46 left in the third quarter. After a few missed shots in the middle of the third, Concord did manage to tie the game up with a bucket by Riley Fitzwater, then take the lead after a foul by Zakharova. Concord ended up taking a lead by one with just a quarter to play 54-53.
Coach Tianni Kelly rallied the troops in the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles put together a six point run to go up 63-58 with 6:31 left in the game. From there it was all Golden Eagles. UC would eventually outlast Concord scoring a whopping 28 points in the final quarter. The ladies would rack up three long range buckets with two coming from the southpaw Dakota Reeves. Reeves ended her night with three triples and 13 points as well. Free throw shooting would also help the Golden Eagles down the stretch as they racked up 11 points from the line and 21 for the contest. UC would come out on top with a 14-point advantage, winning the contest 81-67.
The win would also break Concord's 24 game home win streak.
