How it Happened
Â
The first points of the game were scored by Charleston's Markyia McCormick after she drove in a layup to get the early lead, which was then followed by Trinity Palacio's layup of her own and a three pointer from McCormick. Anastasiia Zakharova joined in on the scoring with a nice reverse layup underneath the basket as well as a quick jump shot to add on to the lead early on. Despite losing a hair tie, Palacio continued to cause turnovers for the Bobcats and keep the ball in the Golden Eagle's possession. Sharpshooter, Dakota Reeves, was able to find her rhythm and cause a Frostburg State timeout with a shot beyond the arc making the lead 25-9 with 1:44 left in the quarter. Charleston played well on both ends of the court, creating a large 27-13 lead at the end of one.
Â
The start of the second quarter was a slow start by both squads on each end of the court, but Charleston was able to find the first points of the quarter with a layup from Sierra Davis with a nice assist coming from Zakharova. Reeves found another way to force Bobcat turnovers by taking a rare two charges in one half of basketball. The Bobcats began to eat away at the large deficit by draining some long-range three pointers and Charleston began to stall out offensively. There was not a lot of offense in the second quarter, but the Golden Eagles went into halftime with the 39-25 lead.
Â
Frostburg State took advantage of an early three-second violation and turned it into point right off the block attempting to spark some life offensively. The Bobcats then went on an 11-2 run to narrow the lead down to five. Reeves was able to knock down another pair of three pointers and add onto her valuable stat line. Right on cue, Reeves continued to make it rain from all over the floor and drained yet another triple. Maggie Stephenson knocked down a shot in the paint at the horn to put the Golden Eagles up 56-45.
Â
If it wasn't obvious to this point, #14 of Charleston can shoot the ball, and she continued to put on a clinic in the fourth quarter. After her three pointer with seven minutes left to play, she put Charleston up big with a 12-point lead. And just when you thought seven three-pointers in one game was a lot, Reeves then decided to make it eight. A tremendous night from the Cincinnati, OH native disallowed for Frostburg to make a late rally to fight back. She ended her night with 26 points going 52.9% from the field. After a couple of drained free throws caused by late Bobcat fouls, the Golden Eagles came out victorious by a score of 74-60.
