Golden Eagles Defeat the Bobcats with Shutout Victory

Buckhannon, W. Va – The Golden Eagles took a trip up I-79 to face the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats for an MEC Football matchup. The Bobcats came into this one off their first win of the year last week with a 31-30 victory over the Alderson Broaddus Battlers.

How it Happened
The Golden Eagles looked to maintain their balance in all three phase of the game after a crushing 70-21 victory over the UNC-Pembroke Braves just a week ago.

Charleston's opening possession entailed an 11-play scoring drive that was led by Chavon Wright at quarterback. Although the drive ended with Wright's rushing score from a yard out, the biggest play of the drive came on a 15-yard reception to Yves Bosmans at the eight-yard line.

The Golden Eagles forced a three and out on the Bobcats' next drive and set up shop deep in their own territory after a 49-yard punt. Despite the yardage, Charleston would score on the legs of Wright once again with a 20-yard rushing score into the endzone to take the 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Charleston would formulate a scoring drive that took six and a half minutes off the clock. Wright added his third consecutive rushing score of the afternoon from 23 yards to extend the Charleston lead to 21-0.

The defense held their own against the Wesleyan offense as they would not let them convert on a 4th and 5 from the Charleston 33-yard line just before halftime and the Golden Eagles would head into the locker room with a three-possession lead.

Charleston would receive the ball in the third quarter and Davis Black checked into the ballgame for the first time in four weeks. Their first drive would end in a Wright touchdown through the air as Black found him wide-open and eager to put another six on the board.

On the next kickoff, the Bobcats would drop the ball and it would roll to the two-yard line where it would eventually be recovered by Wesleyan, but they were pinned back deep in their own territory. Richard Souffrant took the liberty of scoring two points for Charleston as he tackled a Bobcat in the endzone for the first safety scored by the Golden Eagles this season to make it 30-0.

The next long drive from Charleston would result in a rushing score; however, instead of Wright using his legs, it would be the 6'5" quarterback himself, Davis Black, running the ball into the endzone from 11 yards away to go up 37-0.

In the fourth quarter, Charleston would score their sixth and final touchdown of the day as Josh Brown bullied his way through defenders and into the endzone on a powerful 18-yard carry for the 44-0 lead.

The defense would hang on for their first shutout of the year after Davis Black added a pair of kneels to end the game with the Golden Eagles taking this one 44-0.

Wright finished as the team's leading rusher with 126 yards on 19 touches for three scores and also held the only receiving score of the day. Willie Floyd led the Golden Eagles with seven tackles (five unassisted) and a pass break up.
