CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The combination of youth and experience turned out to be the key for a win as the University of Charleston women's tennis team opened the dual season with a 5-2 over visiting Walsh University.
The Basics
In doubles, the freshman duo of Alyssa Cameron and Sofiia Krasikova made quick work at #1 doubles with a 6-0 set. Walsh University struck back at #2 doubles with a 6-3 win. It was the seasoned pair of Barbara Balancho and Harriet Glaves who provided the pivotal win at #3 doubles.
In singles action, Charleston quickly ran the lead to 3-0 with wins by Prinkle Singh (#1 singles) and Cameron (#4 singles). Despite being down 3-0, the Cavaliers of Walsh University continued to battle, winning the next two matches second and third singles. Charleston needed one of the final two matches to secure the win. It was newcomer Sara Martinez who provided the clinch match with a 6-1, 6-4 win at #5 singles. Balancho provided the final point of day for the Golden Eagles, providing the fifth point.
In her debut match, Charleston's Alyssa Cameron proved herself the player of the match, as Cameron dropped a mere 3 games.
On the match, Assistant Coach Lucy Harper said, "I was very pleased with our level of play this afternoon. So many different players contributed to the win today."
