How it Happened
The Golden Eagles have been in three of the last four national championships, winning in 2017 and 2019. On a freezing cold night in New Hampshire, Charleston was going to have to adapt to the conditions if they wanted a chance to move on to the semifinal in Seattle, WA and join their fellow men's and women's cross-country teams. The Ravens have not only been lights out on defense, but they easily find goals on the other end as they have outscored their opponents 84-5 throughout the year.
As many predicted, it was a battle of the defenses. The first shot of the game did not come until the 23
rdminute of play, as Franklin Pierce's Braudilio Rodrigues found a lane inside the box only to misplay his shot past the net. On a free kick from nearly 30 yards away, Eduardo Iranzo played a threatening ball into the box looking for a Golden Eagle head, but Javier Torres would get his gloves around the ball and distinguish the threat.
Miguel Secades Rodriguez would end the drought in the 29
th minute with a heads up play for the Ravens. Vicente Valor Martinez took a shot towards net that found Marc Torrado's gloves, but a slight ricochet off the keeper would create just enough room for Rodriguez to tap in the ball from five yards away to give Franklin Pierce a 1-0 advantage. The Ravens would maintain their lead for the remaining 16 minutes and head into the locker room with the lead.
The Golden Eagles managed eight shots in the second half, but none of them threatened the net. Despite only allowing one goal to the number one team in all of Division II, it was not enough to move on to Seattle, as the Ravens would hold on to their 1-0 lead for the victory over the 6
th nationally ranked Golden Eagles.
