How it Happened
For the third time this season, Charleston would go against a very talented Concord University squad. Concord took the first matchup between the two sides with a 1-0 victory at the Welch Athletic Complex, but just 10 days after, the Golden Eagles would return the favor in Beckley, WV as they answered with a 1-0 win of their own.
Charleston would find the first goal of the match in the 25
th minute of play. Madison Hansen lined up for a long-distance free kick near the midfield stripe and played it low and hard into the box. Sydney Cavender managed to redirect the ball with her right foot and it was just enough to bounce past the Concord keeper to take the 1-0 advantage.
Nearing the halftime horn, Cavender wasn't done just yet. The Golden Eagles were able to deflect a clearance attempt from the Mountain Lions into the attacking third and the ball would end up at Cavender's feet just outside the box. She instantly sent her shot sailing to the left post and it found the back of the net for the second consecutive time. Charleston would take their comfortable 2-0 lead into the locker room.
After a very promising first half, the Golden Eagles would have a nightmare opening start in the second. In the 51
st minute, Concord's Rachel Bell found a fast break with just one Charleston defender on her. Jordan Maynard would come 40 yards off her line to disrupt the fast break and took Bell down with a hard foul to the turf to eliminate the threat. This foul was deemed worthy of a red card and Maynard would have to leave the pitch. Helen Alfes, the graduate transfer from Germany, would strap on the gloves and serve as the squad's goalie for the rest of the game.
In 30 minutes, Concord was only able to fire off two shots on the 10-man squad, but in the 84
th minute the Mountain Lions would be awarded a penalty kick. Helen Alfes chose the right direction, but Reeanna Cook's shot was just inches out of her reach and Concord would cut the lead to one goal with just over six minutes left in the game.
Concord desperately tried to find a goal in the closing minutes, but the Golden Eagles would distinguish all attempts for the rest of the match. With just 10 players on the field, Charleston would take the 2-1 win over the Mountain Lions to keep their season alive.
