How it Happened
The opening stages of the match showed that the Cardinals came prepared to play in the Capital City. In the first fourty minutes, Charleston was unable to put a shot on target with four attempts, while Wheeling threatened
Marc Torrado's net twice on their four tries.
Enter the match,
Sam Bethell.
With five minutes remaining in the first half,
Bethell would take matters into his own hands from the defensive line. He would make his run from near the midfield stripe and quickly make his way to the box where he would then find
Redding for the United Kingdom duo. Redding read Bethell's mind and played him through to the goal where he would shoot over the keeper and into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, the Golden Eagles would take the momentum and capitalize with another goal. In open space,
Tristen Rose found a galloping
Santiago Hoyos making a beeline for the Wheeling goal. Hoyos got control of the long ball and sent the roller underneath the keeper to extend the Charleston lead to 2-0 just before halftime.
In the second half, Charleston would dominate the time of possession and maintain the flow of the game, disallowing any threats to make their way towards Torrado.
In the 72
nd minute of play, the Golden Eagles would cushion their lead.
Eduardo Iranzo dribbled across the top of the box and unleashed a cannon from across his body and into the lower right corner of the net to take a 3-0 lead over the Cardinals.
Charleston would take this one with a final score of 3-0 over Wheeling, bringing them one step closer to taking the conference title for the 5
th year in a row.
