Women's Basketball Selected to Finish 15th in WBCA Preseason Poll

Following their 23-win campaign, the Golden Eagles were slotted No. 15 in the preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 poll on Tuesday afternoon. The University of Charleston women's basketball team is featured in the preseason top-25 poll for the second consecutive season. Last year, the Golden Eagles won the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament for the second year in a row after finishing second in the conference standings with a 16-6 mark in league play. UC posted a 23-9 record last season while making a second-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated by NCAA Division II National Champion Glenville State in the Sweet 16. Grand Valley State (Mich.) was the preseason favorite with nine first-place votes after advancing to the national semifinals last year while boasting a 31-3 record. Western Washington was positioned second behind seven first-place votes after playing in the National Championship last season and finishing with a 25-6 mark. Fort Hays State (Kan.) was ranked third in the preseason poll following a 30-4 campaign, while Union (Tenn.) was selected fourth after a 28-3 season. Ashland (Ohio) rounded out the top five in the rankings after posting a 29-3 mark last year. The Golden Eagles totaled 211 points despite being unranked all last year. UC was one of three teams from the Atlantic Region featured in the top-25 poll. California, PA sits at No. 7 with one first place vote, while defending-National Champion Glenville State (35-1) opens the year at No. 8 with five first-place votes. UC returns 5 of their top leading scorers, including a pair of All-MEC selections from last year in seniors Markyia McCormick (Pickerington, OH) and Dakota Reeves (Cincinnati, OH). The Golden Eagles open up at home against Mercyhurst University and nationally-ranked California, PA on Nov. 11-12 with the MEC/PSAC Conference Challenge.
