How it Happened
The first quarter began with an early advantage for the Bobcats as they took the opening four points with two shots from Mackenzie Freeze and Emilee Weakley. Sierra Davis and Maggie Stephenson led the charge to taking the 7-6 lead back with 5:58 remaining the quarter. The next points of the game would come from Dakota Reeves as she sank her 266
th career three-pointer, the most scored by any player at the University of Charleston, tabbed with a very impressive 45% shooting average. Then, she made her 267
th and 268
th three-pointer just two-minutes later, clearly indicating that it is going to be a while before someone is able to catch the sharpshooter. The Golden Eagles would hold a 19-17 lead over the Bobcats heading into the second quarter of play.
After a pair of free throws from Clarrissa Francis, Charleston would get a triple from both Camryn Nadir and Markyia McCormick, cushioning the lead to five with 8:16 remaining in the half. The Golden Eagles then proceeded to make it rain from beyond the arc as they added on three more triples before the halftime break, making them 5-9 (55%) in the second quarter from three-point land. As the halftime horn blew, Charleston went into the locker room with a 38-33 lead over Frostburg State.
The Bobcats came out of the break and managed to go on a 6-0 run to take a 39-38 lead over Charleston in under three minutes of action. McCormick would end the drought with another triple from distance to take the advantage once more. The squad began to find points underneath the basket as opposed to their long-range shots they had been taking majority of the ball game and stretched their lead even further. Charleston would take a four-point lead into the final quarter of play over the Bobcats.
Despite the single-digit deficit for the first 30 minutes of the game, Charleston began to connect on just about everything as shots fell from under the basket, short range jumpers, beyond the arc, and even at the line. They would connect on seven consecutive shots sparking a 14-6 run, putting them up by 12 points with six minutes remaining in the game. The Golden Eagles maintained their lead for the remainder of the game by matching every point Frostburg State managed to find. Clarrissa Francis' two free throws would be the final points of the game as Charleston took the 80-68 victory over the Bobcats.
