How it Happened
Â
The ladies picked up right where they left off in the MEC tournament on Friday afternoon. They went up by as many as 13 in the first quarter after taking a 17-4 lead with 1:26 left to play in the first period. Charleston started off 6-2 within the first three minutes of play with a long ball from sharpshooter Dakota Reeves, the first of many for the junior on the night. An and one play by Trinity Palacio stretched the lead to 4 and the Golden Bears of Kutztown were never able to come closer than that. The Golden Eagles took a 13-point lead into the second quarter with 10 points coming from the hands of Trinity Palacio.
Â
The second quarter would be a scoring fest for both sides with both teams tallying 20 points in the period. Abby Lee led the way with four points as the Golden Eagles were a scorching hot 9-11 (.818) on FGs for the quarter. Dakota Reeves added six points in the half while collecting seven rebounds as well. Charleston was dominant off the glass in the second quarter, out-rebounding the Golden Bears 10-3. However, the Golden Eagles struggled from the charity stripe, knocking down just one of their five attempts. Going into the locker room UC held a 40-27 advantage.
Â
The third quarter started with a barrage of threes from both teams. Charleston knocked down three long balls within the first four minutes, but the Golden Bears knocked down two threes as well. Kutztown would go on an 16-3 run from 7:54 to 3:03 in the third to put them to within striking distance at 51-47. The Golden Eagles would shut down the run and spark their own 10-1 run that ended the third. Dakota Reeves was the key component to weathering the 16-3 run. She knocked down three long balls en route 14 points in the third quarter alone. She shot 75% from downtown in the third and finished her night shooting 67% on 3PT FGs. She also picked up 11 rebounds in the game, her highest total on the season. Â
Â
"I told the girls we need to rebound" Coach Tianni Kelly commented after the game, "Sometimes I can be a bit of a negative Nancy when teams go on runs like that but I thought we responded really well".
Â
Coach Kelly also took pride in her junior guard saying, "Dakota has worked really hard on going and getting rebounds this season – whenever she's struggling to knock down shots she makes an effort to go get rebounds."
Â
The Golden Eagles finished the game a little sloppy turning the ball over seven times in the final ten minutes. They were outscored 20-17 in the fourth quarter but were able to hold on to take the victory 78-68.
