GLENVILLE, WV – The MEC continues to dominate the Atlantic Region as the last two teams remaining are the Golden Eagles of Charleston and the Lady Pioneers of Glenville State. The meeting between the teams with be their fourth matchup of the year and the winner will punch their ticket to the Elite Eight in Birmingham, Alabama next week.
Coach Tianni Kelly's Squad is slotted in at the number six seed in the Atlantic Regional but has made it with relative ease into the Championship after defeating Kutztown 78-68 and California University of Pennsylvania 52-34 on Saturday.
Charleston was eliminated in 2021 in the Sweet Sixteen last year in Columbus, Ohio after falling to Drury 74-66. This year however, Charleston is on a tear coming into the Championship. Winners of their last six consecutive games and having won 11 of their last 12. Their one loss came at the hands of the Lady Pioneers at home in February.
The Championship game will be a rematch of the Mountain East Conference Tournament final. The Golden Eagles won that contest 80-77 and handed the Pioneers their first loss of the season and won their second consecutive MEC Title with the win.
The matchup also showcases six MEC All Conference Honorees. Charleston's Dakota Reeves and Markyia McCormick have been crucial parts of the offense all year and will need to have big games to take down the Lady Pioneers. The Golden Eagles played what many might call a
perfect game last time against Glenville, they will need to keep turnovers to a minimum if they are to win and book their ticket to the Elite Eight. The Lady Pioneers lead the country in forced turnovers and do so because of their fast-paced style of play and constant pressure defense.
Tip off will be at 7 p.m. on McPherson Court inside the Waco Center in Glenville, WV.
