How it Happened:
Set for a 1:00 p.m. start, Charleston kicked off their 2022 season with a road game against the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters. The Golden Eagles were dominant in the first half, maintaining possession for majority of the time. Charleston had several shots, but it was not until the 30
th minute that the Golden Eagles found the back of the net. It was Joe Gasper who sparked the offense with a good dribble followed by a pass to Eduardo Iranzo, who then rolled it to Paul Caliari who finished at the near post giving Charleston the 1-0 edge. Â
Â
After the goal, both squads tried to work into the attacking third for the rest of the half but were unsuccessful. With one second left in the half, Santiago Hoyos was sent off with a red card. The Golden Eagles would then have to drop to ten men on the pitch for the remainder of the game, forcing them to alter their game plan. The lone Charleston goal would be the decider as the Golden Eagles were forced to grind out a road win under difficult circumstances.
Â
An astounding twenty Charleston players saw action today, tallying up ten total shots. Golden Eagles goalie, Marc Torrado, had three saves in his 90 minutes played which would contribute to his first shutout of the season.
