How it Happened
After 20 minutes of the first half, the Golden Eagles found the first goal of the match. Sydney Cavender was taken down hard in the penalty box, setting up Madison Hansen for the penalty shot early in the match. Hansen has a very unique approach to her penalty kicks, but she never disappoints, as she buried the ball in the lower left corner to take the 1-0 advantage in favor of Charleston.
Just before halftime, a lane opened up for the Yellow Jackets with a one-on-one with keeper Jordan Maynard. Kate Eddy stepped in rather aggressively and disrupted the attack, but a whistle blew, and the Yellow Jackets would set up a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. The initial shot was saved by Maynard, but the rebound was sent to the back of the net by Brooklyn Pritt to level the score 1-1 going into the locker room.
Following the halftime break, West Virginia State was taking shots like it was going out of style. In the first twenty minutes of the second half, they managed seven shots with three of them being on net.
Just as Eddy did in the first half, a big opening for State's offense required a tough foul to stop the fast break. This yellow card was awarded to Madison Hansen just outside the 18-yard box.
Fran Soares-Cupertino lined up for the free kick and sent a bending missile to the nearside corner giving the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the night. This would be the ultimate decider of the night as West Virginia State took this one 2-1.
