Charleston Moves Win Streak to Eight Games With 73-64 Win Over D&E

Box Score Elkins, W. Va – After a win against West Virginia Wesleyan, the Golden Eagles hit the road for a road MEC Women's Basketball match against the Davis & Elkins Senators. The Senators came in with two wins in their last four games with a combined score of 286-344 and averaging 38% of their shots from the field.

The Basics
Location: McDonnell Center
Score: UC 73, D&E 64
Records: UC (12-2, 7-1 MEC), D&E (3-9, 3-5 MEC)

How it Happened
In the first three minutes, the Senators would open up the game with a 9-2 run with two triples from LaChazity Shaver and a lone three-pointer from Taylor Smith. It would take nearly five minutes for the Golden Eagles to claw their way back, but after many hard-fought points they would take an 18-17 lead over the Senators after a Haley Moore layup from underneath. Charleston would go on to score seven more points before the horn and take a 25-23 lead into the second quarter.

After Sierra Davis sunk a pair of free throws from the line in the beginning of the period, the scoring would stall for quite some time for the Golden Eagles which opened up a window for the Senators to retake the lead with a Jackie Wright layup with 6:16 remaining in the half. Clarrissa Francis would find five points to help maintain the Charleston lead before being taken out with just under a minute remaining. Trinity Palacio would end the scoring for the half with a free throw at the line to hold a 37-34 lead heading into the break.

In the last couple of games for Charleston, they had played fast and aggressive after the halftime break, but they were met by a highly motivated Senator squad. Ellie Wilkerson would knock home a three-pointer and tie the ballgame at 39-39 with just over seven minutes left in the third period. Another Senator triple just thirty seconds later would give them the lead for the first time in the second half. Davis & Elkins spread the margin to as much as seven points after yet another shot from beyond the arc; this one coming from Taylor Smith to make the score 52-45. After a Dakota Reeves three-pointer, Francis would tie the game up just before the horn at 52-52 with a jumper.

The first few points would be found at the free throw line for both sides, but the score would remain in close proximity with neither side running away with the game. As the game got closer to the end, the Golden Eagles began to stall the Senators out on defense. Charleston would shoot a phenomenal 10-12 from the line to seal the deal with the final score of 73-64 over the Senators.
