How it Happened:
On Monday afternoon during the opening round of the 2023 MEC Women's Golf Championship, the University of Charleston and Glenville State opened up a 40-shot lead over the next closest team. UC and Glenville State are currently tied atop the women's leaderboard after each team shot a 314 in the opening round. UC's
Iciar Canalejo and GSU's Elizabeth Bickar are currently tied for second (+5), while Charleston's
Beatrice Dietz,
Lucia Martin,
Gabrielle Harrison and Notre Dame's Cataline Uribe are tied for fourth (+7).Charleston's
Ines Fernandez is in eight place (+8), followed by Davis & Elkins' Marina Noti and Concord's Mary Denny in a tie for ninth (+9).
After day two, Charleston held a one stroke lead over Glenville State with just one round left to play.
Iciar Canalejo was just one stroke shy of first place after the second round after shooting even par (72) in Tuesday's round. A trio of UC players sat in fifth through seventh positions, including
Beatrice Dietz (+11),
Ines Fernandez (+14) and
Lucia Martin (+14).
In the final round on Wednesday, the Golden Eagles fell to Glenville State, just two shots behind the Pioneers. The Golden Eagles also had four golfers finish in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.
Iciar Canalejo finished third at +13,
Lucia Martin finished fifth at +21, and
Gabrielle Harrison and I
Ines Fernandez finished in a five-way tie for sixth place at +24.
