How it Happened
In the first half, Jordan Maynard would make arguably the biggest play of the entire match. In the 23
rd minute, a handball in the box would give Fairmont State a chance to take the lead with a penalty kick. Ava Behr sent her shot towards the lower left corner of the frame, but would be denied by two gloves as Maynard would keep the game level at 0-0. Neither side would find a goal for the duration of the half, with the Golden Eagles finding only six shots in the half and the Falcons being limited to two.
It would be in the 47
th minute of play that Charleston would have their chance at a penalty kick after Angela Gatto was taken down in the box. Lina Jaime picked her spot and delivered her shot into the top right corner out of reach for the 1-0 lead.
Carina Widauer would extend the lead in the 55
th minute with the help of Juliette Lucas. The two would sprint downfield facing a two on three and Lucas' pass to Widauer would set her up for a beautiful shot into the right corner of the goal to give Charleston a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles would score their final goal of the match in the 69
th minute on a missile from distance off the foot of Lina Jaime that sailed into the top left corner over the Fairmont State keeper for the dominant 3-0 advantage. The Falcons would find a goal late in the match from Kiera Kuzinski who forced a mistake from Charleston in their own territory, but there would not be enough time on the clock for Fairmont State to put together a comeback. The Golden Eagles would secure the win and move to the next round of the MEC Tournament.
